Having Privilege Is Mundane, Challenging Privilege Is Not

While being interviewed about her experience surviving the Moore, Oklahoma tornado, Rebecca Vitsmun outed herself after Wolf Blitzer incorrectly assumed she had "thanked the lord".

This story is a perfect example of how Christian privilege works in our society.  A national reporter thought it was appropriate to just assume a random person was Christian.  The fact that she was willing to say on national television that she's actually an atheist resulted in national attention because it's a big deal to be willing to be openly atheist.  Even when it shouldn't be.

What Rebecca did was mundane.  Or least it should have been.  It was anything but mundane, and that's the problem.  A lot of atheists are afraid to do this.  Even Rebecca was afraid to do it.  But it was either that or lie.

Her story has been in the back of my mind during the last week since my encounter with my town's mayor.  It's why I wore the shirt with her quote at today's rally at La Vista City Hall.

This shirt exists because people rallied around Rebecca to support her.

What I did should have been mundane.  I was a citizen approaching an elected official with a valid concern.  But, like Rebecca's situation, what should have been mundane was not.  The story went national extremely quickly, starting with The Friendly Atheist and followed by Raw Story, Washington Times, Christian Post, The Blaze, and others.

I know the attention I've had from it, so I can only imagine the focus that's been on Mayor Kindig's office.  I've had a lot of atheists (and some believers) thanking for me for what I did.  But on its own, what I did was not anything special.   It was only special because our culture is constantly telling atheists to shut up and stay hidden, and I refused to do so.  Atheists being open about being atheists is seen as a challenge to the Christian privilege that permeates our culture.

Christian privilege is what had La Vista defaulting directly to the event being overtly Christian, rather than secular or inclusive of other religious viewpoints.  Christian privilege is what let Mayor Kindig feel safe in dismissing my concerns so hastily.

Today's rally was to show that my concerns are not mine alone and that we will not sit idly by while those concerns are dismissed in favor of Christian privilege.

It shows government officials that they're not free to insert their religion into government without someone standing up to them.  And it shows atheists that if they are that person standing up, they will not be doing so alone.  They will have groups like Omaha Atheists and American Atheists supporting them, just like I've had over the last week.

Omaha Has A Few Crazy Ass Religious People

I'm a weird atheist.  I listen to Christian radio.  I go to church[1].  Not only that, but I'm an atheist who feels bad when he goes too long without going to church.  But it's not so much guilt as it is regret in missing a show that seems like it would be fun.  Plus, it's guilt for not working on a project I care about continuing.

Recently, I've had an abundance of places I'm interested in visiting.  A local church's banner recently got the attention of Reddit.  I made it to that place and wrote about it[2].  But there's a few other, less open minded churches, I'm still eager to investigate.  I still need to make it to Candlewood Church, the people behind the creepy[3] UNO student group The Rock[4].

I was mildly curious about Wellspring Lutheran Church before Hemant first wrote about their crazy ass pastor[5].  That made me quite interested in seeing them up close.  My interest grew when their pastor caught Hemant's attention again[6] by thinking magic is real.

Now another church in Omaha that I was mildly interested in has been moved up to the top of the list, Westside Church, in Omaha.  One of their members, Amber Dee Parker, has written a book for kids to teach them to hate[7].

Endorsed by the American Family Association[8]?  If that was all you knew about this book, that would be enough to know it's anti-gay.  The fact that this woman used an interracial couple[9] for this hate-pushing book is deliciously hilarious.

I'm eager to see what her church is like.  I've got a feeling she's far from the only hateful person in there, which makes me sad because it's a massive building.

Her promotional video[10] for this piece of shit has garnered  a couple of responses on YouTube.

Thanks to that video, I now know what she looks like.  If she's there when I am, I might get to call her a hate monger to her face.  That should be fun.

And if church members see this before I get there and kick me out, then it'll simply be a different kind of fun.

Ernie Chambers Takes On Nebraska Homophobes

Living in Nebraska means putting up with a lot of religion and other types of nonsense from our politics.  We're not quite as bad as some other states, but it's bad enough that I have to compare our state to the shenanigans of states like Tennessee[1] or Mississippi[2] to make it seem better by comparison.

But we've also got Ernie Chambers[3].

He's even caught the attention of The Friendly Atheist[4].  If Nebraska can have one Ernie Chambers, I bet we could have more.  We would just need to work to make it happen.

Some Opportunities For Writing

If you're interested in writing, but don't want to be responsible for an entire blog, here's some opportunities for you:

Hemant Mehta, aka The Friendly Atheist, is looking for contributors for a variety of topics.
Book reviews (~1 post/month)
Law (~1-2 posts/week)
Pop Culture (~1-2 posts/week)
Interviews (~1-2 posts/week)
Politics (~1-2 posts/week)
These would be regular contributors, but he's also looking for contributions of single, longer posts.  He does have some requirements, but would also provide compensation.  See his Submissions page for more details.

Another option would be the Guest Blog Storms of Atheos is currently working on getting going.  It wouldn't pay anything, but the criteria for getting something published is much lower.  To submit a guest post there, just e-mail stormsofatheos@gmail.com.

Atheist Census Attacked

Atheist Alliance International has launched an effort to count the world's atheists, and they've called it Atheist Census.  I went there this evening to add my name to their quickly growing census and found something  rather disappointing.

From the AAI website:
On 7 December Atheist Alliance International launched Atheist Census at www.atheistcensus.com, a global project to count and collect information on the world's atheists.  The response to Atheist Census was very positive, with 8,880 confirmed entries and another c. 2,300 pending before the site was taken offline as a result of a DoS (denial of service) attack, around 17 hours after launch.  We do not know who was behind the attack, but it's a reasonable conclusion that they do not like atheists being counted.  We are working hard to get Atheist Census online again.

President, Atheist Alliance International
It's especially disheartening because I went there right after reading an article about how atheists worldwide suffer very real persecution.  It's not out of the question that the same thing could happen to a Christian group, but what would the coverage difference be?  This attack is being covered by me, on this blog that very few people read.  Some of the bigger atheist blogs may post about it as well.  It's sure to be covered on The Friendly Atheist, who linked to it yesterday.

But it certainly won't get covered on any of the big media outlets.  Nor am I saying it should be.  But if it did happen to a Christian group, it's not unrealistic to think it could be talked about on a national news network.  Or at least Fox.
