Shambles of the Fourth Estate

Corporate media is a joke.  And I don't just mean Fox News, the Republican Party's main venue to spread propaganda, which has repeatedly been found to be blatantly dishonest.  CNN regularly fails to correct errors, instead choosing give "both sides" equal merit.

Having someone with an audience, who calls this out is rare thing.  Jon Stewart did so often, but he was far from the norm.  Even less common was the fact that he got results.

Crossfire was cancelled, with Stewart's appearance cited as the reason.  Tucker Carlson has been on the air almost the entire time since.

Knowing there will never again be "The Daily Show, with Jon Stewart" to call out the bullshit we're constantly inundated with creates a huge sense of loss.

This does a lot to show the massive service Stewart provided.  But it does even more to show the even bigger disservice done to us all by the rest of our popular media.  This comedian was a more trusted journalist than almost all of our so called journalists.

Trevor Noah's run as host of the Daily Show will begin next week, but by no fault of his, it could take him years to build the trust Jon Stewart built over his 16 years in the job.

It's a real shame that people doing what Jon Stewart did are so rare when that should be the bare minimum for the entirety of the Fourth Estate.  It's a real shame that one man is able to create such a void by simply claiming his well earned retirement.  Some consolation is in a few people whose work on the subject began with "The Daily Show With Jon Stewart", like Larry Wilmore, Steven Colbert, and John Oliver.

Jon Stewart will be missed because he was special.  I long for a world where such integrity wouldn't be missed because it's the norm.  Where it's on the regular news, not late night and mostly on cable like Comedy Central or HBO.

Are Atheists Being Ignored?

The last time atheism was mentioned in Omaha local media was when people got mad about our billboard last summer[1].  In other words, the last time they talked about us was to talk about how people hated us.

With Apostacon[2] coming up, the organizers have been offering our local media the opportunity to talk to any of the speakers[3], highlighting Nathan Phelps[4] and David Silverman[5].  They even approached the local radio show hosted by 2 atheists[6].  After speaking to some of the organizers about it, it appears that what's happened is the local media intentionally ignoring the atheists.

With our proximity to Topeka, Omaha is familiar[7] with Westboro Baptist Church[8].  And, with them currently suing our state[9], it makes sense that they'd want to talk to a member of the Phelps family who got away from Westboro's hate.  But no.  Complete silence from local media.

And, of course, they should familiar enough with David Silverman[10] to consider him worth talking to.  Complete silence.

If you'd like to help, please contact, POLITELY, any our media outlets and request they give the atheists the attention they deserve.

I Don't Know (Spoiler Alert)

If you haven't been watching HBO's show Newsroom, you really should be.  I don't know if I can overstate how brilliant this show is.  Olivia Munn being on it just a bonus.

If you haven't watched it, and do not want spoilers, you may not want to read any further.

It highlights how broken our corporate media is and the false equivalency of the two major American political parties they push on us.  The news hasn't reported the news in years.  Corporate media caved to money a long time ago.  They now care more about ratings than truth.  They care more for the perception of balance than for accountability.  They care more about being first than being right.

Newsroom showed the craven need for ratings on the episode about the Tuscon shooting & the fact that the supposed news networks reported that she was dead.  Since she's alive today, it's safe to say they got wrong.

With the anchor on the air, the staff is attempting to piece together what happened and what is going on.  When NPR reports that Giffords is dead, the other networks all jump on it and repeat the inaccurate report. With the news people at ACN (Newsroom's fictional network) refusing to report that Giffords was dead, the  company president storms into the studio to tell them about how many viewers they're losing by not reporting the death.  He was more worried about ratings than truth.

The real news networks all care more about ratings, so they all got it wrong.  They didn't need the benefit of hindsight that the writers of Newsroom have.  They just needed to actually follow journalistic standards of verification instead of making shit up or assuming.  The fictional company president and the real news networks are all afraid to say "I don't know."  They have this fear because their viewers have this fear.  People are afraid of saying "I don't know."

Comfort with "I don't know" as an answer is the biggest difference I've noticed between theists and atheists.  When I discuss religion with theists, they are almost always not comfortable with stopping at "I don't know."  While some atheists also have this particular issue, for most atheists, "I don't know" is a necessity.  We don't have the luxury of making up an answer or accepting one we do not know to be true.

The world needs more people admitting they don't know.  If people were capable of that, we would have less of the travesty of 24 cable news and less of the abomination that is organized religion.
