An Update On The Campaign To Get Biblename to AACon2014

Some friends met last weekend to create a campaign to get a talented photographer to the 2014 American Atheists Convention.  Having an active YouTuber in the room also meant getting a pretty good video for the effort.

Soon after posting it, I saw links to it all over my news feed.  Throughout the week, I've had numerous inquiries about the status of it.

In less than a week, with entirely viral marketing, this campaign is fully funded.

It's heartwarming to see atheists so eagerly supporting artistic talent and each other.

People Worth Your Attention / BibleName Foto's Camera Needs Your Help

The atheist movement is jam packed with hidden heroes.  JT Eberhard's talk at Skepticon 6 was about this not well enough known fact.  One of those hidden heroes was a friend, someone who I've mentioned here before.  He's someone I've been meaning to do a People Worth Your Attention post on for a long time, so this post will double as that.

He tries to stay relatively hidden but cannot because his talent is on display in some notable places.  Although, it's still not what I think he deserves.  The way JT put was spot on.  He puts a face on atheism.

The thing that makes him worth your attention isn't that Keith Lowell Jensen has used his photos.

It's not that both Keith & Shelley Segal are currently using them as their profile pictures.  The magic of Biblename Foto is that his Facebook page & Flickr (for higher resolution pictures) are a constant example of the fact that atheists are real people with real personalities and real emotions.  He does photograph theists too, but him being at an atheist conference is the single best way to get a great picture of everyone there not wearing that conference's code for "do not photograph me".

My post about Apostacon being done was only a fraction of the pictures that came from that weekend.  I ended up doing another post, with more pictures, and it was still not even close to all of them.  Just for Apostacon, he had to separate it out into 5 albums.

It's ridiculous how much longer I could go with this string of pictures, but I've got to cut it off somewhere and finally get to the reason this post is happening tonight instead of later down the road.

This weekend, Biblename's camera got broken.  Not only does did it give us all of the above photos (except for the first one, which I took and intentionally put first to show the clear difference in quality a good camera provides), but it's also his primary means of income.

With the help of a friend who works at a camera store, we can get the camera repaired for roughly $500.  An effort to raise this money has been started, with a variety of ways to donate.  If you're able and willing, the primary method is to use PayPal to send money to jcrouch702@yahoo.com.  Anything beyond what it takes to get him camera capable again will also go to him, as a "thank you" for all the work he puts into this, most often for free.

However, I do not make this request without bias.  He is one of my favorite people, after all.  But would it not be a tragedy if these photos were to end?

As mentioned above, his work can found on Facebook & Flickr.

Apostacon, In One Photo - Plus Some Others

David Silverman, Photobomber

Some Apostacon[2] organizers were taking a picture during the "Meat" Ball and David Silverman joined in.  Nothing sums why Apostacon is Apostawesome better than this picture.

Although, there's a few others from the costume party well worth sharing here.  Starting with, Silverman's reaction to the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

And, yes, I've plugged Biblename Foto[11] in two posts in a row[12].  He's that fucking good.  See here[13] for the entire album of photos most of these are taken from.

I'm not quite done talking about Apostacon.  I've got at least one more planned.  For now, it's just the fun pictures and some bragging about some praise we received this morning[14].

Apostacon... Finally Done

I'm finally home from Apostacon[1].  Walking into the house felt like getting home from a long road trip, even though it was a 20 minute drive from home.  I'm exhausted from a great weekend.  And I'm far from who put the most into this, so I can only imagine how exhausted the main organizers are.

At these conventions, I usually don't spend much time watching the talks[2].  This time was even more so.  I only got to see 4 of the talks, and 2 were only because they were during lunch (Shelley Segal[3] & Dan Barker[4]).

I was so exhausted, I nodded off during Amanda Knief's talk despite her being one of my favorite people on Earth.  I also got myself a signed copy of her book, The Citizen Lobbyist: A How-to Manual for Making Your Voice Heard in Government[6], and am excited to read it.  If you're at a conference she's speaking at, she's a must see.

Another must see is Fred Edwords[8].  He's a genius.  He knows many things about organizing groups, and he has a way of telling us these things in a way that makes you motivated to go do it.  If you ever want to start a group and need help getting it going, the help of Fred Edwords is invaluable.  And he's dedicated to providing that help.  Atheism simply wouldn't be the same without him.

I'm sad that I missed Matt Dillahunty's mentalism show.  Especially considering how impressed I saw people were with it.  It was so involved that we had to clear the room for him to set up.  Sadly, it was the only thing we didn't record (at Matt's request because he's got some special plans related to it).

Luckily, Matt wasn't the only thing people were impressed with.  It's a huge relief to have had Apostacon go so well.  Attendees really seemed to like it.  I've seen several positive reviews on the Facebook.

JT Eberhard has had nothing but high praise for us[11].  That's a lot of pressure for next year.  Although, we've already got some ideas for next year, and have already had our first meeting for next year.

I think my favorite part of the weekend was seeing Jamila Bey wearing a shirt familiar to me.

She bought a shirt for REASON[13], Omaha's skeptics group and our oldest existing non-theist group.  Seeing someone of prominence, who I respect. give some love to a group I love makes me happy.

Another highlight was a conversation I had with Greg Lammers, American Atheists' National Affiliate Director[15].  It's always good to see him, since he's the kind of guy you're always glad to see, but this time was especially good.  I learned about American Atheists' plans for upgrading their support of local groups, including polling groups for what kind of support they'd want and potentially customizing it for each individual group.

I'm sure I'm missing a lot, but I'm sleep deprived so that's inevitable.  Plus, I'm saving certain bits to put into their own posts.

Some great pictures of the event are up on Biblename Foto[16], with more promised to come.

Next stop is Skepticon 6[17].  Based on what Skepticon organizer, Micah Weiss, has said, Skepticon is sure to even better than it has been in the past.  I won't go into it any more than that because I don't want to ruin their surprises.  But it's going to be good times.

The Twelve Apostates

Christians have the Twelve Days of Christmas and their Jesus has the Twelve Apostles. I, obviously, do not buy into the Twelve Apostles myth. And, while Secular Christmas is celebrated by many atheists, I do not (except for the obligations I've held onto that come from having family who does celebrate).

I was recently planning for a list of the atheists I respect and sometimes get inspiration from. While thinking of who to include, and what size to make the list, I thought of the Twelve Days of Christmas and the Twelve Apostles.  So I decided to call my list "The Twelve Apostates" and publish it as a series with a new one each day leading up to Christmas Day.  I have just enough to say for most of them, that making it all one post would make it much too long for a single post.

Some will be specific people, while others will be groups of people.  It more appropriately be called "Twelve  Days of Apostates", but I like "Twelve Apostates" better.  Yes, I'm neurotic enough that I put that much thought into it.  Some will be from my childhood, while others will be much more recent.  They will be in no particular order, with one exception on the first.

You may not agree with any or all of them, but it's not meant to be a universal list. It's meant to be personal to me.  I would love to see your lists as well.  I hope to use those as part of another list, that will be meant to be more universal.  A friend already beat me to it, quite a while ago.

The title of this post and the date it was published is a coincidence.
